Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Kill 26 Amid Ceasefire Dispute

Must read

Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 individuals, following accusations by Israel against Hamas for breaching a ceasefire in the Palestinian region. The casualties included five people in a residence in the Bureij refugee camp, four in a building in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, and five in a vehicle in Khan Younis, including two children. The attacks persisted into the early hours of Wednesday across Gaza, as reported by witnesses and media sources.

Israeli military officials stated that the airstrikes were in response to Hamas violating the ceasefire by targeting Israeli forces in a controlled area. The Israeli government notified the United States before conducting the strikes. Despite reports of an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hamas in Rafah, Hamas denied involvement in the attack on Israeli forces.

US President Donald Trump affirmed the stability of the US-backed ceasefire while en route to South Korea. The ongoing dispute revolves around the handover of human remains by Hamas to Israel, with accusations from both sides regarding violations of the ceasefire terms. The ceasefire agreement, brokered by the US, entails the release of living hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian convicts, and the retrieval of deceased hostages’ remains by Hamas.

The controversy escalated when Netanyahu accused Hamas of deceitfully handing over the remains of a deceased Israeli hostage. Hamas, on the other hand, attributed the delay in the handover to alleged Israeli violations of the ceasefire. The situation remains tense as both parties exchange accusations, with calls for decisive action against Hamas from Israeli officials. The search for hostage remains intensified with the assistance of heavy machinery from Egypt, as efforts continue to recover bodies in Gaza.
