“Stranded Humpback Whale Timmy Struggles in Baltic”

Must read

A young humpback whale named Timmy faced another challenge in the shallow bays off the Baltic coast of Germany on Sunday morning. Timmy, estimated to be between 12 to 15 meters long, has been struggling for survival for a week. Rescuers used dredging equipment and boats to assist the whale in finding its way back to the Atlantic Ocean due to the challenges posed by its size.

Despite continuous efforts to free the whale, rescue teams are now relying on Timmy’s ability to navigate its way out independently. The whale, whose gender remains unidentified, was named after Timmendorfer Strand, a popular white sandy beach along Germany’s Baltic coast where it was initially sighted on a nearby sandbank last Monday.

Repeated attempts to rescue Timmy have been unsuccessful, with the whale showing signs of severe stress, skin irritation, and entangled fishing gear in its mouth. The whale managed to free itself briefly over the weekend but encountered difficulties again.

Humpback whales are not typically found in the Baltic Sea, although occasional sightings of large whales occur every few years in the region. Conservationists attribute whale strandings worldwide to disrupted migration routes and human activities, noting that some whales may lose their way while searching for food.

Marine expert Daniela von Schaper from Greenpeace expressed hope for Timmy’s recovery despite its weakened state. She emphasized the importance of understanding the impacts of climate change on whale behavior and migration patterns, pointing out that warming waters off the U.S. West Coast may be contributing to more whales getting entangled in fishing gear.
