Val Kilmer to Star in Film Through AI Replication

Must read

A year following the passing of the actor, a generative AI rendition of Val Kilmer is set to act alongside in a forthcoming independent film, marking a bold use of artificial intelligence in the film industry. First Line Films revealed on Wednesday that Kilmer will be part of the cast in a movie titled “As Deep as the Grave.” The filmmakers mentioned that Kilmer had agreed to be in the film prior to his passing but couldn’t due to health reasons.

Kilmer’s estate granted approval for his digital replication and is being compensated accordingly. Mercedes Kilmer, the actor’s daughter, stated that the role held significance for her father. She expressed, “He always viewed emerging technologies positively as a means to enhance storytelling possibilities. This essence is something we are all honoring in this particular film, in which he played an essential role.”

Val Kilmer passed away in April last year at 65 due to pneumonia. In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent two tracheotomies. Subsequent to losing his natural voice, Kilmer utilized AI software to recreate his voice. In his last on-screen appearance in 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kilmer’s voice was digitally modified.

The infiltration of artificial intelligence into acting has been a contentious topic in Hollywood recently. Efforts have been made to introduce AI-generated performances by some, including the company Xicoia, which introduced the AI-generated persona “Tilly Norwood” last year. SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, has criticized Xicoia’s “AI actor” but has guidelines regarding other uses of the technology, stipulating that performer consent is required for digital replicas. The rules state that consent not obtained before death must be obtained from a designated representative or the union.

Coerte Voorhees and producer John Voorhees mentioned in an email that they adhered to SAG guidelines. They stated, “We believe we are setting an example of ethical and correct practices, particularly when working with a deceased actor’s estate and family.” “As Deep as the Grave,” previously known as “Canyon of the Dead,” was filmed several years ago but faced delays in postproduction. The film is based on the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who unearthed Indigenous history in Arizona.

The AI version of Val Kilmer portrays the character Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Indigenous spiritual leader. The ensemble includes Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin. Coerte Voorhees mentioned that Kilmer, who professed to have Cherokee heritage, was attracted to the project five years ago. The producers are working to secure distribution for the film with the aim of releasing it this year. Voorhees commented, “It was unfortunate that his health prevented him from playing this role that had deep spiritual and cultural significance to him. We are privileged to collaborate with his daughter Mercedes, who brings her filmmaking expertise to bring this character to life as we originally envisioned.”
