Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has experienced economic challenges across various industries recently, but Tenaris, a major steel pipe manufacturer in the city, remains resilient. Celebrating its 25th year of operations, Tenaris marked the occasion with a gathering of dignitaries and company officials.
Having reactivated the tubular mill and commenced pipe production in 2000, Tenaris became Canada’s sole producer of seamless pipes for oil and gas extraction. In 2022, the company upgraded its plant by introducing electric resistance welded pipe manufacturing.
With over 26,000 global employees, Tenaris now employs over 800 workers in Sault Ste. Marie, with 600 hired in the last four years. Mayor Matthew Shoemaker highlighted Tenaris’s essential role in supporting the city’s energy sector amid increasing energy demand.
Tenaris reiterated its commitment to long-term growth in the oil, gas, and energy industries. Martin Castro, Tenaris President for Canada, expressed optimism about rising interest in their products from Canadian customers, aiding the company’s stability and potential expansion.
Despite trade tensions, Tenaris currently does not require government financial support, as it relies on Canadian and international clients. Castro commended government efforts to protect domestic industries, fostering higher demand for locally produced goods.
Looking ahead, Tenaris anticipates no layoffs in Sault Ste. Marie and continues to invest in post-COVID projects. The company serves major oil and gas firms globally, with revenues reaching $14.9 billion USD in 2023. Notably, Tenaris has injected $255 million into the Sault’s industrial sector since 2020, aiming to enhance production capabilities and diversify its product range.
