Air Canada has announced the suspension of service on four seasonal routes to U.S. destinations due to the escalating cost of jet fuel. The affected routes and their last flights are:
– Toronto to Sacramento: Last flight scheduled for August 1
– Vancouver to Raleigh: Last flight scheduled for July 29
– Toronto to Charleston: Last flight scheduled for September 6
– Montreal to Austin: Last flight scheduled for September 7
The airline plans to restore full service on these routes in the summer of 2027 and assures affected passengers of alternative travel options or refunds if applicable.
In response to the surging jet fuel prices driven by the conflict in Iran and the resulting oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, airlines globally have initiated flight reductions. Last month, Air Canada announced the suspension of six routes deemed economically unviable. Additionally, WestJet disclosed a capacity reduction of approximately one percent in April, three percent in May, and nearly six percent in June by consolidating flights and adjusting seasonal service durations.
The spike in jet fuel costs has led to fare adjustments by major airlines, including Air Canada, WestJet, Porter Airlines, and Air Transat, who are implementing fare increases or surcharges to mitigate the escalating operational expenses.
