A total of 10 Conservative sources, including seven caucus members, were interviewed by Radio-Canada. Four sources are uncertain about backing Poilievre in an upcoming confidence vote, despite previously supporting him. Criticism arose after Poilievre accused former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of illegal activities related to the Aga Khan scandal and the SNC-Lavalin affair, claiming that the RCMP actively covered up these incidents.
One source labeled Poilievre’s remarks as disqualifying him from becoming prime minister, citing his ongoing fixation on Trudeau and struggles to move past electoral defeat. Party members plan to address Poilievre’s statements at an upcoming caucus meeting, seeking clarification.
Despite the backlash, many party members acknowledge Poilievre’s enduring support within the Conservative Party. In a separate interview, Pierre Paul-Hus, Poilievre’s Quebec lieutenant, expressed confidence in Poilievre, attributing the criticism of the RCMP to former Commissioner Brenda Lucki’s actions and decisions influenced by political motives.
In a written statement, Poilievre clarified that his comments were directed at Lucki’s conduct, emphasizing her history of controversies and political interference favoring the Liberal government. While some view Poilievre’s podcast remarks as a misstep, others believe in giving leaders a second chance, citing the electoral success of past Conservative leaders on subsequent attempts.
