Former MLB pitcher Vince Horsman praised the Toronto Blue Jays for their playoff performance, noting their old-school baseball style. Horsman, a Dartmouth native, shared his admiration for the team’s balanced approach in a time dominated by analytics and power-focused strategies.
Speaking ahead of Game 2 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Horsman commended the Jays for their ability to utilize the entire field while still showcasing power hitters. He emphasized that their playing style resonated with a nostalgic era of baseball.
With over four decades in professional baseball, Horsman transitioned from player to coach, working globally in countries like the United States, Mexico, Italy, and Taiwan, where he currently serves as a pitching coach for the 7-Eleven Unilions in Tainan City. Having coached extensively in the Jays’ farm system, Horsman expressed his joy for the team’s success and the unwavering support they receive from Canadian fans.
Horsman’s journey into baseball began unexpectedly at a national tournament in Moncton, N.B., catching the eye of a Jays scout with his standout performance. Despite an initial setback due to the scout’s illness, Horsman’s talent eventually led to a professional contract offer.
Starting his minor league career in Medicine Hat, Alta., Horsman progressed through various stops in the Jays’ farm system before making a direct jump to the major leagues in 1991. Reflecting on his experience, he highlighted the surreal feeling of competing against players he once only saw in video games.
As the only Nova Scotian to play for the Jays and one of a few from the province to reach the majors, Horsman reminisced about his time playing in front of large crowds in Toronto during the team’s playoff runs. Following his stint with the Jays, he went on to pitch for the Oakland Athletics and the Minnesota Twins before transitioning to coaching.
Beyond baseball, Horsman shared his passion for history and teaching, noting that if not for his baseball career, he would have pursued a path in education. Immersing himself in local cultures worldwide, he expressed gratitude for the diverse experiences afforded to him throughout his career.
