Swiss skier Marco Odermatt secured victory in the men’s World Cup giant slalom opener at Sölden in the Austrian Alps, fending off local favorite Marco Schwarz. Despite a challenging final run delayed by weather, Odermatt extended his narrow lead from the first run by 0.24 seconds to clinch his 46th career win, 27 of which are in giant slalom. Schwarz, making his first podium appearance in almost two years due to previous knee and back injuries, finished second. Atle Lie McGrath of Norway claimed third place, trailing by just 0.03 seconds.
The competition faced tough conditions with limited visibility and snowfall, prompting delays and adjustments between runs. Odermatt commended the course workers for their efforts and expressed satisfaction with his performance amidst the challenging circumstances. The second run commenced after a significant delay to clear the course of fresh snow and improve visibility for the racers.
Although Schwarz’s teammate Stefan Brennsteiner initially held third place after the first run, he slipped to fourth in the final results. Odermatt praised the Austrian team’s strong showing, particularly Schwarz’s impressive return to form. Despite narrowly missing out on a home victory, Schwarz showcased a strong performance in the competition.
Further down the rankings, Calgary’s Erik Read finished 37th, while William St-Germain of Mont Sainte-Anne, Que., placed 60th in the opening run. The event also marked the absence of last year’s winner, Aleksander Steen Olsen, due to a persistent knee injury.
Brazilian skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen faced disappointment as he skied out of the course during his first run, emphasizing the fine balance required in alpine skiing between intensity and precision. Pinheiro Braathen, aiming to secure Brazil’s first-ever World Cup win in the sport, expressed regret over miscalculations during the race.
The World Cup competition saw strong performances from various athletes, including world champion Raphael Haaser and former overall champion Alexis Pinturault. American skier River Radamus qualified for the second run, finishing in 21st place. Adverse weather conditions forced organizers to adjust the course layout, affecting run times for the top racers.
