“Skiers Push for Safer Training Conditions After Tragic Incidents”

Must read

After a frightening crash last year, Mikaela Shiffrin returned to skiing with heightened awareness of the risks involved in training. Despite sustaining serious injuries in a World Cup race, the two-time Olympic champion understood the potential hazards of practice sessions.

Shiffrin emphasized the importance of evaluating the level of danger in training conditions, acknowledging the uncontrollable variables that skiers often face. French skier Alexis Pinturault shared similar concerns, highlighting the unsafe environments where training takes place.

The tragic death of World Cup racer Matteo Franzoso during preseason training in Chile brought renewed attention to safety issues in Alpine skiing. Franzoso’s fatal crash underscored the life-threatening risks that athletes encounter on the slopes.

Reflecting on her own experience, Shiffrin discussed the psychological impact of returning to ski after a traumatic injury. She stressed the need to assess and mitigate risks effectively, stating that accepting danger as an inherent part of the sport is not sufficient.

One major disparity lies in the safety standards between race courses and training courses. Training slopes often lack adequate safety measures, including fewer safety nets, limited medical support, and smaller maintenance teams, posing significant risks to skiers.

Sofia Goggia, the Olympic downhill champion, compared ski racing to high-speed motorsports, emphasizing the constant threat of danger. While races incorporate numerous safety nets, the same level of protection is often absent on training courses.

Following the recent tragedies, calls have been made for dedicated training courses with enhanced safety features, similar to those used in World Cup races. Efforts are underway to improve safety standards, including better snow preparation, increased medical support, and stricter safety protocols for training sessions.

Despite challenges in funding and coordination, skiing federations and organizations are striving to enhance safety measures on training courses. Discussions on financial responsibility and collaboration among nations are ongoing to ensure a safer environment for athletes during training camps and competitions.
