Singer Bonnie Tyler has awakened from a coma but is currently in a critical condition in intensive care, according to an update on her official website. The Grammy-nominated pop star, known for her distinctive voice, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, last month for emergency surgery on her intestines. Subsequently, she was placed in a medically induced coma.
Although Tyler has regained consciousness, her recovery process is gradual. The latest statement, released on Monday, indicates that while her condition is showing signs of improvement, her medical team anticipates a slow recovery. They are optimistic about her eventual full recovery but emphasize that it will require time.
Due to her current health situation, Tyler’s upcoming shows scheduled until August have been either canceled or rescheduled. However, there is hope that the planned autumn performances will proceed as scheduled.
Bonnie Tyler is most renowned for her 1980s mega-hit ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a song that continues to captivate audiences, especially during astronomical events like solar or lunar eclipses. Originally hailing from Wales, she first gained fame with her 1978 hit “It’s a Heartache” before solidifying her music legacy with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a song penned by Jim Steinman, the renowned producer and songwriter associated with Meat Loaf.
