A high school basketball standout from Prince Edward Island is set to elevate her game and athletic career as she prepares to join the State University of New York at Albany next year. Alex Newson has recently committed to studying at the university while playing for the Albany Great Danes, marking a significant milestone as the first known basketball player from P.E.I. to compete in NCAA Division I basketball.
Expressing her excitement, Newson emphasized the significance of representing a small province like P.E.I and hopes to inspire fellow female basketball players as the sport gains traction in the region. Starting her basketball journey at the age of five, Newson’s dedication has led her to make strategic moves, including relocating to Ontario for a more competitive basketball environment at King’s Christian Collegiate.
Newson reflected on her journey, highlighting the exposure to elite players and the rigorous competition she faced in Ontario. Her determination to excel in basketball fueled her dream of playing at the NCAA Division I level, a goal she eventually achieved through continuous improvement and unwavering commitment.
Earlier this year, Newson proudly carried the flag for Team P.E.I. at the Canada Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, where she played a vital role on the provincial basketball team coached by her father, a former Canada Games athlete. Acknowledging her parents’ unwavering support, Newson credited their encouragement and guidance for her success, especially her mother’s involvement in the college visitation process.
Looking ahead, Newson is eager to combine her passion for basketball with academic pursuits as she plans to major in biology at the university. With training slated to commence next summer, Newson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play NCAA basketball, recognizing the rarity of such a chance for Canadian athletes.
