Apple announced price increases for its iPad and MacBook models due to rising costs of memory and storage chips, driven by the demand from the AI industry’s data center expansion. The company stated that the consumer electronics sector is facing a significant challenge with unprecedented component price hikes.
While Apple had previously absorbed the cost increases, it has now decided to adjust prices for several products, including the iPad and Mac. On Apple’s website, immediate price adjustments were visible, such as the MacBook Neo starting at $949, up by $150, and the Education model at $819, previously $679.
In addition to the iPad and Mac, Apple raised prices for its HomePod smart speaker and Apple TV, but the iPhone remains unaffected. Other retailers selling Apple products in Canada may follow suit depending on when they receive notifications from Apple.
The increase in prices is attributed to the scarcity of critical components like RAM, essential for various electronic devices. AI companies’ demand for these components, particularly from major memory manufacturers like Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix, has led to a limited supply for consumer electronics manufacturers, thereby driving up prices.
According to industry experts like Willy Shih from Harvard Business School, the consumer electronics sector has experienced significant price hikes across various products due to the ongoing supply chain challenges.
