“Book-to-Screen Boom: Canadian Stores Witness Sales Surge”

Adapting books into movies or TV shows is a common practice that often results in increased book sales. Canadian bookstores are now observing a surge in sales for book-to-screen adaptations unlike ever before. Kobo, an online retailer specializing in e-books and audiobooks, has noted significant sales growth for books recently adapted for the screen.

For instance, the hockey romance novel Heated Rivalry by Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid, which inspired the popular Crave TV series of the same name, and the classic gothic tale Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, slated for release as a movie starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi on Feb. 13, have seen notable boosts in sales.

Other examples include the romance novel People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry, now a Netflix movie starring Emily Bader and Tom Blythe, and the period romance An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn, the basis for the recent season of Netflix’s Bridgerton series.

Fandoms and Community Impact

Deandra Lalonde, Kobo’s Content Sales Lead of North America, highlighted the role of social media fandoms in driving the surge in book sales. She emphasized the impact of viral moments from press tours, BookTok and Bookstagram posts, and the emergence of related podcasts, group discussions, and subreddits. This engagement signifies a shift towards deeper immersion in the created worlds.

Notably, the success of Heated Rivalry exceeded expectations, with a remarkable increase in e-book sales following the show’s premiere. The demand surged by 265% in the initial two days and nearly 500% by the seventh day. Indigo reported a staggering 5,805% rise in sales for Rachel Reid’s series post the TV adaptation.

Heated Rivalry has consistently topped CBC’s bestseller list since Jan 13, showcasing sustained popularity among readers.

Additionally, there is a considerable uptick in sales for Wuthering Heights even before the movie release, indicating significant anticipation among readers.

The upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights has sparked discussions and controversies, especially surrounding casting choices and on-screen chemistry, generating further interest in the movie.

According to Lalonde, the growing interest in book-to-screen adaptations can be attributed to the convenience of streaming services, emphasizing the impact and reach of Heated Rivalry in particular.

Black Bond Books’ Mary-Ann Yazedjian highlighted the positive reception of recent adaptations like Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell and the resulting surge in book sales due to increased visibility and awards recognition.

Expanding Reader Base

Yazedjian pointed out that book-to-screen adaptations, notably Heated Rivalry, are drawing new readers to bookstores, reflecting the power of visual adaptations in engaging audiences.
