Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre faced ongoing backlash for his recent remarks regarding the RCMP and its management, as he attempted to clarify his statement suggesting that some individuals should be imprisoned for the previous Liberal government’s actions.
During an interview with the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre criticized the RCMP’s leadership as “frankly just despicable” and accused them of “covering up” for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He asserted that numerous scandals during Trudeau’s tenure warranted criminal charges, specifically mentioning Trudeau’s acceptance of a vacation from the Aga Khan.
Poilievre emphasized that had the RCMP fulfilled its duties, Trudeau would have faced criminal charges. However, the RCMP conducted investigations into the vacation and the SNC-Lavalin affair without laying any charges.
In response to the controversy stirred by his comments, Poilievre addressed reporters, clarifying that he did not explicitly propose Trudeau’s imprisonment but believed that certain scandals warranted severe punishment within the Liberal government.
Apart from the debate over Poilievre’s stance on Trudeau’s accountability, he faced internal party tensions. Some Conservative members expressed reservations about his critique of the RCMP and its leadership. Despite this, other Conservative MPs voiced support for Poilievre, downplaying the significance of his podcast comments.
While several Conservative MPs questioned Poilievre’s leadership following his remarks, the dissent was not outwardly visible during the caucus meeting. Poilievre’s criticism extended to former RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, with whom he called for her resignation due to documented scandals and political interference benefiting the Liberal government.

Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman expressed confidence in frontline police officers to maintain public safety, avoiding direct commentary on the current RCMP leadership. Despite the internal party divisions, Poilievre maintained his stance on the RCMP’s actions and reiterated the need for accountability within the force.
