In recent days, a small marsupial has been roaming free on Montreal’s South Shore, likely having escaped from illegal captivity, according to animal rights advocates and Quebec’s Environment Ministry. Videos circulating online show the animal, believed to be a red kangaroo by the provincial Environment Ministry, hopping around in Boucherville, Quebec.
This incident sheds light on the issue of illegal trafficking of exotic animals in Canada, as stated by Chamie Angie Cadorette from the animal protection agency Galahad SPCA. There is evidence of a thriving black market for exotic animals in Quebec, with listings offering various creatures for sale, including monkeys, kangaroos, turtles, and snakes.
The marsupial was first noticed by a concerned citizen at a horse stable, where it was reportedly kept in inadequate conditions without the required permits. Following a report to the anti-poaching agency, it was discovered that the facility did not comply with Quebec regulations for keeping wild and exotic animals.
Efforts are underway to safely capture the marsupial, which is currently at risk near a highway. While the animal is not considered dangerous, authorities advise the public to keep a safe distance. Galahad SPCA and a rescue organization are prepared to relocate the animal to a sanctuary, pending government approval.
The Environment Ministry is actively involved in assessing the situation and planning a safe capture operation, adhering to regulations that prohibit unauthorized handling of animals requiring special permits. Calls for stricter enforcement against the illegal exotic animal trade in Quebec have been made by Cadorette, emphasizing the need for government intervention. The Environment Ministry did not provide comments on the issue of exotic animal trafficking when approached for a statement.
