Sophia Su, an enthusiastic birder, attended her mother’s graduation ceremony at the University of Calgary before heading straight to southeast Calgary in search of the woodpecker. Despite her family’s amusement at her hobby, Su was determined to add the woodpecker to her list of 200 species by the year’s end.
Su easily located the bird among a group of photographers aiming their large cameras at it. She described the woodpecker’s striking appearance with its black and white wings and bright red head as a beautiful sight that brought her immense joy.
The red-headed woodpecker’s presence in Calgary has garnered significant attention due to the species typically not being found in this region. Known as a “vagrant” species in the birdwatching community, it occasionally strays beyond its usual habitat. Jody Allair from Birds Canada explained that while the red-headed woodpecker is commonly found in southern Ontario and parts of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec, it rarely ventures into Alberta.
