A resident in Gatineau expressed surprise after receiving a warning from the city about a bird feeder in her backyard that could lead to a $400 fine. Ashley Robillard recently set up the disputed feeder on a tree in her yard. Following a complaint to the city’s bylaw services, an officer visited on April 17 while Robillard was away, leaving a notice behind. Robillard, who cherishes nature and animals, found the complaint disheartening. She had refrained from filling the feeder since being informed of the issue, fearing a potential court summons and fine if further complaints were made.
The City of Gatineau’s bylaw on the care of animals prohibits bird feeding on any property, although exceptions are made for small birds like chickadees and goldfinches. The bylaw mandates that feeders must be wildlife-proof and not create unhygienic conditions. Gatineau City acknowledged receiving a complaint about bird feeding and sending an officer to investigate, but due to Robillard not being present at the time, only a notice was left.
Robillard is contemplating switching to a feeder with a larger seed catcher but is apprehensive about facing another complaint. She questioned the necessity of being taken to court over a bird feeder, expressing confusion over the existence of such regulations given the widespread availability of bird feeders.
