A shelter-in-place advisory that was put in effect for Ginoogaming First Nation on Wednesday has now been lifted by the Ontario Provincial Police. The advisory was issued in response to a report of gunfire in the community early that morning. Subsequently, the police initiated a search for two individuals who were reported to be armed and dangerous and on the loose in the vicinity.
An update provided by the police on Thursday confirmed that one person was found deceased and another person was injured. By Thursday evening, the OPP announced that two men had been apprehended after a two-day hunt for suspects linked to a homicide investigation.
According to the authorities, the situation in the community has now stabilized, and there is no longer an active threat to public safety. While no additional details have been disclosed, the investigation is ongoing, and residents are advised to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
As a result of the search operation, several schools and businesses in the area were closed. Nishnawbe Aski Nation officials conducted a press conference in Thunder Bay on Thursday afternoon.
