Hulu has decided to cancel the planned reboot of the popular ’90s supernatural series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” as announced by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the former star of the show, in a recent Instagram post. Gellar, who portrayed the iconic character Buffy in the original series, shared the disappointing news with fans.
The pilot for the proposed reboot, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” was filmed with Ryan Kiera Armstrong, a 16-year-old actress cast as the new vampire slayer. The original show, which depicted a group of young individuals in the fictional town of Sunnydale battling vampires and other supernatural entities, revolutionized traditional television storytelling.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” cultural critics, as highlighted by a report from CBC Ideas, credited the show for reshaping television production by incorporating intricate narrative arcs and profound character development within the backdrop of contemporary societal concerns and tensions.
Expressing gratitude in her post, Gellar thanked Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director assigned to revive the series. She reflected on her unexpected return to Buffy’s character and emphasized the profound impact the character has had on her and the audience.
Gellar affirmed that despite the cancellation, her love for Buffy and its significance remains unchanged. She reassured fans that in case of any impending apocalypse, they can still reach out to her, echoing a famous line from the show.
Hulu has yet to comment on the decision to halt the reboot when contacted by CBC News.
