“North of North” Leads with 20 Nominations at Canadian Screen Awards

The latest Canadian Screen Award nominations for 2026 showcase a diverse array of standout productions, with notable mentions going to the groundbreaking comedy series filmed in Nunavut, a captivating sci-fi suspense reminiscent of “Sinners,” a time-travel mockumentary inspired by “Back to the Future,” and the popular queer hockey drama. The leading nominee this year is the CBC, Netflix, and APTN collaboration, “North of North,” starring Anna Lambe, which received an impressive 20 nominations for its portrayal of a young Inuk mother navigating a public divorce.

Standing alongside acclaimed titles like “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and “Schitt’s Creek,” “North of North” secured nominations in various categories, including best comedy series, best lead performer in a comedy (Anna Lambe), two best supporting performances in a comedy (Braeden Clarke and Maika Harper), and best comedy ensemble. In the motion picture category, standout nominees include films like “40 Acres,” “Blue Heron,” and “The Things You Kill.”

Another standout contender this year is the global hit, “Heated Rivalry,” which earned an impressive 18 nominations, including recognitions for best drama series and best lead performers François Arnaud and Hudson Williams. Notably, a recent rule change now limits nominations to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, excluding non-Canadian actors like Connor Storrie from eligibility.

In the film category, diverse and critically acclaimed films such as “40 Acres” and “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie” received recognition, with the latter making a mark with its unique storyline about musicians accidentally time-travelling. Additionally, “Blue Heron” and “Mile End Kicks” also garnered significant nominations in various categories.

The awards ceremony follows a challenging year for the Canadian entertainment industry, with a decline in box office revenue for Canadian films. Despite this, Canadian television shows like “Schitt’s Creek” and “Heated Rivalry” have achieved global success, boosting Canada’s cultural exports. The Canadian Screen Awards ceremony will be hosted by Andrew Phung on May 31, with a simulcast on CBC, Bell Media, and Corus platforms. Special awards will be given to industry icons like Mike Myers, Hazel Mae, and maxine bailey, highlighting the industry’s resilience and achievements.
