The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the standout at the recent Academy Awards, securing the coveted best picture Oscar along with five additional accolades. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” led the nominations race this year with a groundbreaking 16 nods, ultimately triumphing in four categories.
Michael B. Jordan, the star of “Sinners,” clinched the best actor award, receiving a rousing ovation for his debut win on his inaugural nomination. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley’s portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet” earned her the best actress title, following a string of victories during the 2026 award season.
Amy Madigan was honored as best supporting actress for her role in “Weapons,” while Sean Penn secured the supporting actor Oscar for his performance in “One Battle After Another,” marking his third Academy Award win.
Canadian talents also shone brightly at the event, with Maggie Kang from Toronto accepting the best animated feature Oscar for “KPop Demon Hunters.” Additionally, Canadian production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, along with makeup artists Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, claimed awards for their work on “Frankenstein.”
In a night filled with triumphs, “One Battle After Another” not only secured wins for best picture and best supporting actor but also earned Paul Thomas Anderson his first-ever awards for best adapted screenplay and directing. The film also triumphed in the editing and casting categories, the latter being a newly introduced Academy Award classification after 24 years.
“Sinner” garnered four awards, with Ryan Coogler winning best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw making history as the first racialized woman to win best cinematography.
“Frankenstein,” filmed in Toronto, also received recognition with three wins. The awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, showcased the talent and diversity of the film industry, celebrating achievements across various categories.
