Prize Offered for Predicting Next Truck Collision on Fredericton Walking Bridge
A total of 15 transport trucks have collided with the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge on Waterloo Row in Fredericton over the past two decades, according to city officials. The most recent incident occurred last Friday.
Following two truck collisions in September, some local businesses have introduced a contest inviting participants to predict the next accident date. The New England Pizza Company, located near the bridge, has pledged a $100 gift card for each correct prediction.
Chris Babineau, the owner, expressed surprise at the swift occurrence of the latest collision. He mentioned that over 20 winners have been identified so far, with over $2,000 worth of free pizzas awarded as a result of Friday’s accident. Babineau, a former truck driver himself, highlighted the abundance of warning signs in place for truckers approaching the bridge.
Chad McGarity, owner of Traffic Zone Signs and Supplies, also participated by offering a $150 gift card and a custom-made sign to the individual who correctly guessed the next accident’s timing. McGarity sees the contest as a promotional tool for his business and a means to enhance public awareness.
Despite the numerous collisions, the City of Fredericton has assured that the bridge’s structural integrity remains intact and inspections are regularly conducted. Babineau noted the significant engagement generated by the contest and mentioned that some participants have even revised their entries to improve their chances of winning.
Looking ahead, Babineau plans to involve sponsors for future contests related to truck collisions on the bridge.
