Despite facing mixed reviews, tough competition, last-minute changes, and legal obstacles, the biographical film about the Jackson family, titled Michael, has emerged as the top-earning biopic in history. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie has raked in a staggering $977 million globally, surpassing the previous record held by Oppenheimer in 2025. Earlier, it had already outperformed Bohemian Rhapsody with its $911 million earnings by mid-June, and it now stands as Lionsgate Films’ most lucrative production, surpassing the success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Michael chronicles the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, portrayed by his real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, from his early days performing with the Jackson 5 to the pinnacle of his career with hits like Billie Jean, Beat It, and Thriller.
The film notably steers clear of addressing the allegations of child sexual abuse against Michael Jackson, who passed away in 2009. Fuqua had initially planned to include a scene depicting Jackson being searched during the 1993 police raid of Neverland ranch, but due to legal agreements with the Jackson estate and Jordan Chandler, the script underwent significant changes.
According to reports from Puck and The Hollywood Reporter, an out-of-court settlement prevented the inclusion of Chandler’s accusations in any productions related to Jackson. The version released in theaters concludes in 1988, avoiding any mention of the later controversies surrounding the singer. The extensive reshoots, costing up to $50 million, were covered by the estate.
While some critics have praised Michael for its portrayal and Jaafar Jackson’s performance, others have criticized its pacing and narrative depth. The film’s simplistic depiction of the central character has drawn comparisons to other musical biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody. Despite the controversy, the movie’s success at the box office has exceeded expectations, hinting at the possibility of a sequel exploring Jackson’s later life.
Fans and critics alike continue to debate the film’s approach and its impact on shaping Michael Jackson’s legacy in the eyes of a new generation.
