In the skies above Pokrovsk, a city in Ukraine facing intense conflict, the presence of numerous drones has made it too dangerous for military convoys to traverse the streets openly as they would become easy targets. However, amid thick fog this week, a video surfaced on social media depicting a small group of Russian soldiers maneuvering through Pokrovsk on motorcycles and in a car with missing doors.
The brief 30-second clip, shared by Russian military bloggers, offered a glimpse into the strategic battleground of Pokrovsk, portraying a desolate landscape reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic movie like “Mad Max.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that unfavorable weather conditions were aiding Russia in its attempts to infiltrate the city, which has been a target for over a year.
Recent front-line maps suggest that Pokrovsk is on the verge of falling, with some military analysts predicting that Russia may soon capture both Pokrovsk and the nearby city of Myrnohrad. A Ukrainian drone operator, known as Goose, mentioned that the increased presence of Russian forces in the area has altered the dynamics, with Russians now using vehicles and motorcycles in addition to operating in smaller teams.
Goose, from the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, has been stationed in Pokrovsk for several months, witnessing Russia’s encroachment towards the city, which once housed 60,000 residents before the full-scale invasion by Moscow in 2022. Unlike the direct assault on Bakhmut earlier in the conflict, Russia is employing a encircling strategy to surround Pokrovsk from the south and northeast.
With a growing number of troops in the city, Russia aims to establish offensive positions to cut off Ukraine’s supply lines and advance further north into the Donetsk region. Ukrainian military estimates suggest a significant Russian troop buildup in the area, with hundreds already present in Pokrovsk.
Pokrovsk has become a “grey zone,” where neither side maintains full control, and the front line constantly shifts, monitored closely by drones. Colonel Volodymyr Polevyi of the Ukrainian Armed Forces mentioned that the persistent drone threat has forced troops to adapt their logistics, with infantry members walking long distances to avoid being targeted.
The urban area’s basements now serve as military positions, as Ukraine aims to retain control of the city amid the escalating conflict. Despite evacuation advisories, around 1,000 residents remain in the mostly ruined city, defying orders to leave their homes. The challenging situation highlights the ongoing struggles faced by civilians caught in the midst of the conflict.
