Must read

Firefighters successfully rescued a worker trapped beneath debris in a historic tower undergoing renovations in Rome, only to face the tragic news of his subsequent death. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the worker, Octav Stroici, who passed away following the collapse of the Torre dei Conti. The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed Stroici’s identity and thanked rescuers for their efforts, which spanned 11 hours.

Rescuers encountered challenges during the operation, attempting different strategies to reach the trapped worker, including the use of a crane and drone. Despite facing obstacles, they managed to extract Stroici from the tower after a lengthy process due to shifting rubble. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri highlighted the delicate nature of the operation, emphasizing caution to prevent further collapses.

Following the rescue, Stroici was loaded onto a stretcher and transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. While three other workers were rescued unharmed, one individual remained hospitalized in critical condition. The incident drew attention from tourists who witnessed the dramatic rescue efforts unfold at the historic tower.

The Torre dei Conti, constructed in the 13th century, has a history of structural issues, with previous collapses reported in earlier centuries. The ongoing restoration project, valued at $11.1 million, aimed to preserve the tower and enhance its facilities. Italian authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, focusing on potential charges related to negligence.
