“Astronomers Aim to Capture First-Ever Video of Black Hole”

Must read

A team of astronomers is currently working on capturing the first-ever video of a black hole to unveil the mysteries surrounding these cosmic entities. Led by astrophysicist Sera Markoff, the team aims to use advanced technology to observe the behavior of a black hole in the Messier 87 galaxy.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which previously produced the first image of a black hole in 2019, is now focused on tracking the movement of the black hole in M87. With a network of telescopes across various locations, the EHT will gather data more frequently, allowing for a detailed study of the black hole’s dynamics.

Vincent Fish, an operations data manager for the EHT, highlights the unique opportunity to capture the evolution of the black hole in M87 due to its slower changes compared to other black holes. By creating a time-lapse video from the collected data, astronomers hope to gain insights into the intricate processes surrounding black holes.

While the team considers observing Sagittarius A* in the Milky Way galaxy as another potential candidate, the rapid changes in this black hole pose challenges for detailed observation. The video footage, once processed, is expected to provide valuable information on the extreme physics governing black holes and their impact on the universe.

Markoff emphasizes the importance of understanding black holes, as their interactions with surrounding matter can influence the formation of stars and galaxies. By studying these cosmic phenomena, astronomers aim to unravel fundamental questions about the universe’s origins and evolution.
