“Canadiens Lock in Star Rookie Hutson with $70.8M Deal”

Must read

The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Lane Hutson, last season’s NHL rookie of the year, with an eight-year contract extension worth $70.8 million US. The extension will come into effect in the 2026-27 season following the expiration of Hutson’s rookie deal and will span until 2033-34. Hailing from Michigan, the 21-year-old was drafted in the second round of the 2022 draft from Boston University.

During his debut full NHL season, Hutson achieved notable milestones, including setting a franchise record for rookie points with 66 and equalling the team’s assist record with 60. He topped all rookies in points, amassed 26 power-play points, and maintained an average ice time of 22 minutes and 44 seconds over 82 games. Hutson’s contributions were pivotal in propelling the youthful, rebuilding Canadiens to their first playoff qualification in four years.

His exceptional performance earned him the Calder Trophy, making him the seventh player from the Canadiens to win the award and the first since goalie Ken Dryden in the 1971-72 season.
