OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has taken a step towards potentially going public by filing preliminary paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This move puts OpenAI in line with its competitors, Anthropic and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, both of which are also heading towards initial public offerings.
CEO Sam Altman had hinted at the possibility of an IPO last year, stating that it was the most likely path for OpenAI due to the substantial capital required to advance its technology. Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit focused on developing AI for societal benefit, OpenAI is now valued at $852 billion US.
However, OpenAI is facing stiff competition from companies like Google and Anthropic in the AI space. Analysts suggest that the company needs significant capital to support its operations. Last year, OpenAI restructured itself into a public benefit corporation, laying the groundwork for a potential public listing.
In a recent legal battle, OpenAI emerged victorious against Musk, who had sued the company in an attempt to reverse its conversion into a for-profit entity. Despite its valuation, OpenAI has not disclosed its financial performance or profitability timeline. The company, like its competitors, is investing heavily in technology development, leading to losses.
OpenAI’s CFO, Sarah Friar, emphasized the importance of being prepared for a public offering and noted that the company is already operating with similar financial rigor as a publicly traded firm. She highlighted the benefits of tapping into the larger public markets.
Altman envisions a future where AI technology is more widely accessible and beneficial to society. He outlined three key goals for OpenAI, including building an automated AI researcher, fostering economic growth, and providing artificial general intelligence to everyone on the planet.
Altman’s vision aligns with recent proposals from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and President Donald Trump, advocating for public ownership stakes in AI companies to ensure broader participation in the benefits of AI technology.
