Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has taken an unexpected leave from his teaching duties at Harvard University following the emergence of emails revealing his friendly relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Summers had been gradually stepping back from public engagements due to the fallout from his association with the late Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Initially intending to continue teaching economics classes at Harvard, Summers eventually decided to step down from teaching and also resigned as director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School.
According to Summers’ spokesperson, Steven Goldberg, he made the decision to go on leave as Harvard conducts a review, with his co-teachers taking over the remaining class sessions for the semester. While the university did not mention Summers by name in its decision to reopen an investigation, the move came after emails surfaced showing his ongoing rapport with Epstein despite the latter’s criminal history.
In response to the escalating scrutiny, Summers faced from remaining in his teaching role, some students recorded his remarks to undergraduates emphasizing the importance of continuing to teach. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized Summers on social media for associating with Epstein, stating that he should not hold positions of influence.
Summers also announced his resignation from the board of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, with the board expressing respect for his decision and acknowledging his contributions. This decision came a day after Summers had announced his withdrawal from public commitments. Epstein, who passed away in 2019, was notorious for his connections to influential figures, sparking controversies and theories about misconduct among elites.
The U.S. President, Donald Trump, signed a bill into law on Wednesday requiring the Justice Department to disclose its investigations into Epstein, despite his prior resistance to releasing the information. The bill aims to shed light on the inquiries into the late sex offender’s activities.
