At least 26 individuals lost their lives, and numerous people were reported missing following a Russian drone and missile strike targeting residential buildings in Ternopil, Ukraine, as stated by Ukraine’s interior minister on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko mentioned that 26 individuals were still unaccounted for after the assault, including three children, and close to 100 individuals sustained injuries. The attack involved 476 drones and 48 missiles, causing damage to energy and transport infrastructure, leading to emergency power disruptions in various regions amid harsh weather conditions.
The upper levels of a residential structure in Ternopil were severely damaged in the strike, with billowing black smoke and an orange blaze visible from a fire within the building. Emergency teams worked throughout the night to search the debris for potential survivors, with Klymenko emphasizing the importance of locating anyone trapped under the rubble.
In a heartfelt plea, Oksana Kobel expressed hope for the survival of her son, who was inside a ninth-floor apartment during the attack. The devastating incident left no apartment untouched in the building, with flames rapidly engulfing the structure, causing panic among residents attempting to escape.
Authorities confirmed that among the casualties were three children. Meanwhile, neighboring Poland, a NATO member, temporarily shut down Rzeszow and Lublin airports and deployed Polish and allied aircraft to secure its airspace as a precautionary measure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strikes on multi-story residential buildings in Ternopil and highlighted the urgent need for increased international pressure on Russia to halt the prolonged conflict in Ukraine. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of effective sanctions and enhanced support to Ukraine to address the escalating crisis.
The assault also impacted energy infrastructure in seven Ukrainian regions, leading to nationwide power consumption restrictions. Reports of explosions in Lviv and residents seeking shelter in metro stations in Kyiv added to the chaos, highlighting the widespread repercussions of the military confrontation.
Despite Russia’s denial of deliberately targeting civilians, the country retaliated, citing “terrorist attacks” on its territories. Ukraine’s military claimed to have launched counterattacks on military sites in Russia, intensifying the already volatile situation.
Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts in Turkey and upcoming discussions with U.S. military officials aimed to revive peace negotiations with Russia, as direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow have stalled since July. As the conflict persists, uncertainties loom over potential financial aid to war-torn Ukraine and the nature of future security arrangements, with the U.S. ruling out the deployment of troops in the region.
