Britney Spears, aged 44, was officially charged in California for driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol, as confirmed by authorities. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office disclosed that the pop star faces a single misdemeanour count for this offense.
An inquiry made by The Associated Press to a representative of Spears seeking a response was left unanswered. The criminal complaint filed did not specify the exact type or quantity of alcohol and drugs allegedly involved in the incident.
Following her arrest on March 4 for driving recklessly in her black BMW on U.S. 101 near her residence, Spears, who displayed signs of impairment, underwent field sobriety tests. Subsequently, she was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of substances and detained at a Ventura County jail. Released on bail the next day, the police concluded their investigation and presented the case to prosecutors on March 23.
In response to the incident, a representative referred to Spears’ actions as “completely inexcusable” and expressed hope that it would mark a necessary turning point in her life. Shortly after her arrest, Spears voluntarily enrolled in a substance abuse treatment program.
The arraignment for Spears is scheduled for the upcoming Monday, although her physical presence in court is not mandatory due to the misdemeanour nature of the charge, as per prosecutors.
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Britney Spears rose to fame as a prominent figure in the music industry, known for hits like “Toxic,” “Gimme More,” and “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Her musical achievements include several platinum-certified albums, with standout successes such as “Baby One More Time” in 1999 and “Oops! … I Did It Again” in 2000.
