Must read

Canada’s national soccer team, ranked 26th, faced a tough 1-0 defeat against Australia, currently ranked 25th, due to the strong five-man defense. Now, Canada is gearing up to take on Colombia, ranked 13th, in a crucial match on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET in Harrison, N.J.

Colombia, known for its talented players, has already secured a spot in the upcoming World Cup by finishing third in CONMEBOL qualifying with a record of 7-4-7. They showcased their strength at the previous Copa America, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Argentina in the final.

Fresh off a commanding 4-0 victory over Mexico, Colombia displayed their prowess with goals from Luis Diaz, Jhon Lucumi, Jefferson Lerma, and Johan Carbonero at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Canada’s midfielder Jonathan Osorio, whose parents are of Colombian descent, acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing Colombia as a formidable team with recent impressive performances. Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch, sees this match as an opportunity to demonstrate their progress and compete against a top-tier opponent.

The upcoming game against Colombia at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., presents a valuable experience for the Canadian team. Marsch emphasized the significance of facing Colombia, highlighting the similarities in playing style and physicality that mirror what they may encounter at the World Cup.

This match marks the beginning of a series of games against South American teams for Canada. Following the Colombia match, they will play Ecuador at BMO Field on Nov. 13 and Venezuela in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Nov. 18.

In the goalkeeping department, Dayne St. Clair will start the game, as Marsch continues to evaluate his options for the top goalkeeper spot leading up to the World Cup. Marsch noted the competition for positions within the squad, emphasizing the depth and intensity of the roster battles.

Additionally, Marsch confirmed that midfielder Stephen Eustaquio and forward Tani Oluwaseyi will be in the starting lineup against Colombia. Canada has faced Colombia three times in the past, with varying results, including a 2-0 victory in the 2000 Gold Cup final and two friendly defeats.

Colombia’s recent form has been solid, staying unbeaten in their last six matches. Notably, Diaz has been a key scorer in South American qualifying, while captain James Rodriguez earned accolades at Copa America.

Canada’s record this year stands at 6-2-3, with encouraging performances despite a few setbacks. Marsch remains optimistic about the team’s potential, pointing out positive aspects from their previous matches.

Australia’s victory over Canada was attributed to a defensive error, highlighting the importance of maintaining focus and minimizing mistakes in upcoming fixtures. Australia will next face the United States, ranked 16th, in their upcoming match in Commerce City, Colo.
