Nedra Talley Ross, the final living member of the iconic 1960s group the Ronettes, known for hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You,” and “Walking in the Rain,” has passed away at the age of 80. Her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, confirmed her passing at their residence on Sunday, as announced on the Ronettes’ official Instagram account.
Ross’s distinct voice and style were instrumental in shaping a musical era, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. With support from Phil Spector in songwriting and production, the Ronettes, known for their alluring appearance and powerful vocals, rose to fame as one of the leading acts of the girl-group period. They even toured with the Rolling Stones in England and formed a close bond with the Beatles.
During her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech in 2007, Ross reflected on the highs and lows of show business, emphasizing the importance of her family’s unwavering support in navigating the tumultuous entertainment world. She expressed gratitude for the unforgettable experiences and opportunities bestowed upon her.
Originally from New York City, Ross, along with her sisters Veronica “Ronnie” and Estelle Bennett, introduced their debut album, “Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes, Featuring Veronica,” in 1964. The album featured five tracks that charted on the U.S. Billboard charts and was later recognized in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, marking a significant milestone in the trio’s career.
Their rendition of “Sleigh Ride” on Spector’s “A Christmas Gift for You” album garnered attention, featuring in various soundtracks and TV shows. Despite their initial success, the group disbanded around 1967 after a series of hit singles.
The Ronettes’ musical journey began in March 1963 when Estelle Bennett arranged an audition with Phil Spector, who was renowned for his distinctive “wall of sound” production style. After signing with Philles Records, they provided background vocals for other artists before recording their own hits like “Be My Baby” and “Baby I Love You.”
Following the group’s disbandment, Ross transitioned to Christian music, releasing the album “Full Circle” in 1978. She was married to DJ and TV personality Scott Ross until his passing in 2023. Despite their success, the Ronettes engaged in a protracted legal battle with Spector over royalties for nearly 15 years, which concluded without a favorable outcome. Ross is survived by her four children.
