Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Kill 26; Ceasefire Breach Alleged

Must read

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least 26 individuals on Tuesday. The strikes were in response to Hamas allegedly breaking a ceasefire in the region. Among the casualties were five individuals in a house in Bureij refugee camp, four in a building in Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City, and five in a car in Khan Younis, including two children. The attacks extended into early Wednesday, with reports of airstrikes in Gaza City as well.

According to witnesses, Israeli planes carried out the attacks, with Mohamed El Saife, a freelance videographer in Gaza, confirming the presence of fighter jets in the area. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office did not provide specific reasons for the airstrikes, but an Israeli military official stated that Hamas had breached the ceasefire by attacking Israeli forces in an Israeli-controlled region.

Israel informed the United States before launching the airstrikes, as reported by two U.S. officials. While there were initial reports of an exchange of fire in Rafah, Hamas denied responsibility for the attack on Israeli forces. The ongoing conflict stems from Hamas accusing Israel of failing to meet its obligations under the ceasefire agreement, while Israel accuses Hamas of similar violations.

The ceasefire agreement, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, involved the release of living hostages by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian convicts and detainees by Israel, along with the return of deceased hostages’ remains. The issue of the remains has become a contentious point, with Netanyahu alleging that Hamas manipulated evidence regarding the recovery of a missing hostage’s body.

Efforts to locate and retrieve the remaining bodies are underway, with Hamas citing challenges due to the destruction in Gaza and limited equipment. The search has intensified with the use of heavy machinery, including bulldozers from Egypt, to aid in locating bodies believed to be in underground tunnels. The conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza, with both sides accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
