Ariel Weil, the Mayor of central Paris, where the Louvre is situated, has expressed his belief that the security system at the museum failed during the recent crown jewel heist. This contradicts the statement made by the French culture minister, Rachida Dati. Following the theft of the priceless French crown jewels by thieves who broke into the museum, criticism of the museum’s security measures spread nationwide.
Dati, in response to the incident, shifted blame between mismanagement by the museum leadership and emphasized the effectiveness of the museum’s security system. Weil has raised doubts about the quickness of the theft, which took only seven minutes for the thieves to break into the Apollo gallery window and steal items valued at $143 million Canadian dollars.
During an interview with “As It Happens” host Nil Koksal, Weil shared his concerns and emphasized the need for the city of Paris to have a more active role in the Louvre’s security plans moving forward.
Weil mentioned that while he is not directly involved in managing the Louvre, as the Mayor of the region, he feels a shared responsibility for the security of the area. He highlighted efforts to collaborate with the museum and the French government to enhance security measures, particularly in public spaces.
Regarding the recent robbery, Weil emphasized the need for a closer relationship between the city and the Louvre, which currently falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture. He acknowledged the significant investment planned to improve security at the museum and expressed satisfaction at being part of these discussions.
Weil questioned the statement by the French culture minister claiming that the security apparatus did not fail, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation into the breach. He expressed skepticism about the notion that nothing went wrong during the heist, emphasizing the need for accountability and improvements in security measures.
