“Pentagon Deploys USS Ford to South America”

Must read

The Pentagon announced on Friday that the U.S. military is deploying an aircraft carrier to the waters near South America as part of an escalation of military presence in the region. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group to bolster the U.S. Southern Command’s capabilities in detecting, monitoring, and disrupting illicit activities that threaten the safety and prosperity of the United States.

Currently, the USS Ford, accompanied by five destroyers, is stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, with one destroyer in the Arabian Sea and another in the Red Sea. The aircraft carrier was reported to be in port in Croatia on the Adriatic Sea as of Friday. The deployment of the aircraft carrier will significantly increase resources in a region that has already experienced a substantial U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean Sea and off the coast of Venezuela.

The recent deployment and increased frequency of U.S. strikes, including the 10th strike conducted by the military on a suspected drug-running vessel, have sparked speculation about the extent of the Trump administration’s operations in combating drug trafficking. The operations have also raised questions about potential actions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is facing narcoterrorism charges in the U.S.

With over 6,000 sailors and Marines on eight warships in the region, the potential arrival of the USS Ford strike group could bring an additional 4,500 sailors along with nine squadrons of aircraft. The situation is further complicated by Tropical Storm Melissa, which poses a threat as it remains nearly stationary in the central Caribbean, with forecasts indicating a potential intensification into a hurricane.

The recent strikes on suspected drug-running boats have resulted in casualties, with the latest strike targeting a vessel operated by the Tren de Aragua gang. The Trump administration has emphasized its commitment to combating drug-related activities in the region, with Hegseth stating that those involved in such activities will be treated with the same severity as terrorist organizations.

The U.S. military’s operations have expanded to the eastern Pacific Ocean, targeting areas where significant drug trafficking occurs, including from major producers like Colombia. Tensions with Colombia have escalated, leading to the imposition of sanctions by the Trump administration on Colombian President Gustavo Petro and others accused of involvement in the global drug trade.

Maduro has condemned the U.S. military operations, viewing them as attempts to undermine his leadership. He has praised security forces and civilian militias for conducting defense exercises along Venezuela’s coastline to prepare for any potential threats. The U.S. military presence in the region is seen as a strategic move to assert influence and align countries with U.S. interests, according to analysts.
