Carney quipped that Trump, being averse to losing, has not responded to his proposed wager. Leaders often engage in friendly bets supporting their respective countries before major sporting events. In a past instance, Barack Obama and former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper bet two cases of beer on the outcome of the 2014 Canada-U.S. Olympic hockey matches.
As the sole MLB team representing Canada, the Blue Jays have garnered nationwide support and admiration during their impressive journey through the postseason. Despite only one player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., being born in Canada, the team has been embraced as “Canada’s Team.”
Carney, who visited the Blue Jays during their practice session ahead of the World Series, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure victory. He commended the team’s unity and work ethic, drawing parallels to the teamwork required for success in the political arena.
The Prime Minister, before departing on an overseas trip, alluded to a possible lift of the purported “leaders’ curse,” which plagued the Blue Jays during the 2015 postseason coinciding with the federal election. Notably, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre attended a recent game, breaking the perceived curse as the Blue Jays triumphed.
Carney’s upcoming travel itinerary will take him to Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea, coinciding with the Blue Jays’ clash against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. Despite the timing, Carney remains optimistic about the Blue Jays’ chances and their matchup against the Dodgers in Game 1.
During a visit to the White House earlier, Carney hinted at the Blue Jays’ potential World Series participation in a light exchange with Trump. The Blue Jays are set to face the Dodgers in Game 1 on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
