Peabo Bryson, the renowned Grammy-winning R&B artist known for iconic Disney film collaborations with Céline Dion on Beauty and the Beast and Regina Belle on Aladdin’s A Whole New World, has passed away at the age of 75.
In a statement, the family expressed their sorrow over the loss but found solace in the love and impact Bryson had on many through his music and kind spirit. Apart from his Disney classics, Bryson enjoyed a successful career spanning over five decades with hits like Feel the Fire, I’m So Into You, and Can You Stop the Rain.
Céline Dion, in a heartfelt post on X, extended her condolences to Bryson’s family, reminiscing about their collaboration on Beauty and the Beast and acknowledging his enduring influence on her musical journey. The song Beauty and the Beast, penned by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, garnered critical acclaim, winning two Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards.
Hailing from South Carolina, Bryson, a versatile singer, songwriter, and balladeer, collaborated with a myriad of artists, including Minnie Riperton, Roberta Flack, and Natalie Cole. His musical journey began in 1975 with the R&B hit Do It With Feeling, and he went on to deliver chart-topping duets like Tonight, I Celebrate My Love with Flack and If Ever You’re in My Arms Again.
In a remarkable comeback, Bryson released his latest album, Stand for Love, in 2018, marking his return to the studio after 11 years. His 22nd album, Grace, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, was released in February. Beyond music, Bryson also showcased his talent in various stage productions, demonstrating his multifaceted artistic prowess.
Following a heart attack in 2019, Bryson made a full recovery, but unfortunately, he suffered a stroke in late May, leading to his hospitalization. Colleagues and fans, including comedian Loni Love, R&B artists Jody Watley and Kenny Lattimore, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, paid tribute to Bryson online, highlighting his remarkable impact on the music industry.
The family plans to announce memorial and celebration-of-life arrangements for Bryson at a later date.
