Donald Trump secured victory in the U.S. presidential election a year ago mainly due to voter anger over the high cost of living in the post-pandemic economy under the Biden administration. Despite Trump being back in office for almost 10 months, prices for numerous everyday items continue to increase, causing U.S. voters to express economic strain. However, the president is refuting claims that his tariffs are contributing to inflation or acknowledging the rising costs.
There is a growing realization within the Trump administration that they are politically exposed on affordability issues, yet they have not devised a strategy to address people’s cost-related anxieties beyond simply denying them. In a recent interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump dismissed concerns about affordability as a Democratic ploy orchestrated to mislead voters.
Despite Trump’s repeated promises to “make America affordable again” during his 2024 election campaign, recent statistics reveal that his administration has not achieved this goal. The latest consumer price index data for September shows grocery prices up by 2.7% compared to the same period in 2024 and up 1.4% since Trump took office in January.
Various household expenses have also surged year over year, with housing costs up by 3.6%, medical care by 3.9%, car insurance by 3.1%, and electricity by 5.1%. Despite these increases, Trump continues to assert that costs are decreasing, citing lower gas and egg prices as evidence, although these claims have been contested. Critics argue that while egg prices have dropped following a previous spike due to the avian flu epidemic, there is no solid proof that Trump’s policies have significantly reduced energy costs.
In response to concerns about affordability, Trump has proposed unconventional solutions such as offering 50-year mortgages and distributing $2,000 dividend checks from tariff revenues to citizens. He also suggested a departure from the current health insurance subsidy model under Obamacare, aiming to introduce a new healthcare plan called “Trumpcare.”
Trump’s dismissal of economic anxiety and his insistence on a thriving economy contradict polls and election outcomes that emphasize voters’ worries about the rising cost of living. As Americans face escalating expenses in their daily lives, Trump’s credibility may be challenged, especially in light of his track record of distorting data to align with his narrative.
