“Wolseley Residents Voice Concerns Over Increased Bus Traffic”

Must read

Residents in Wolseley are expressing discontent with the recent alterations to Winnipeg’s transit system, particularly the increased bus traffic along Arlington Street. According to resident Rebecca Forgan, the changes were poorly planned, with minimal input from the community. Winnipeg introduced a new transit network in June, shifting from the old “hub-and-spoke” model to a more grid-like “spine-and-feeder” system, affecting almost all bus routes in the city, including Route 28 buses traveling down Arlington Street.

During a recent city council meeting, Forgan and other residents raised concerns about the high volume of buses on Arlington Street, noting disturbances and potential damage to homes. Following discussions, the council’s city centre community committee suggested exploring a reduction in the speed limit on Arlington Street from 50 km/h to 30 km/h.

Forgan highlighted that the significant increase in bus traffic poses safety risks for children in the area due to limited space for play and the absence of fencing. Concerns were also raised about the impact on the street’s pavement, which was already deteriorating prior to the transit changes.

In response to feedback, Winnipeg Transit has made minor adjustments but emphasized the need for a year-long analysis of travel patterns before implementing major changes. Residents were urged to endure the current bus frequency for the time being. Forgan and others are advocating for an immediate speed limit reduction to 30 km/h on Arlington Street and are hopeful that alternative routes can be explored to alleviate the congestion on the street.

Winnipeg Transit has issued a “slow order” instructing bus operators not to exceed 30 km/h in the area. However, the order is not legally binding, and adherence may vary among drivers. City officials, including Coun. Janice Lukes, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to addressing concerns about the transit system, indicating that significant changes may take time to materialize.
