In a heated televised debate on Wednesday, two out of the three candidates vying for the Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans district seat engaged in a fiery exchange. Barry Manuel and Chris Tibbs, representing the Liberal and PC parties respectively, wasted no time in trading accusations of dishonesty and deceit.
Tibbs, the incumbent MHA for the area, took a direct shot at Manuel, the former mayor of Grand Falls-Windsor, in his opening statement, accusing him of spreading falsehoods about him. Manuel swiftly retaliated, asserting that Tibbs was in no position to call him a liar given his own deceptive behavior.
The tension escalated when Tibbs referenced a phone call from one of Manuel’s family members, prompting Manuel to confront Tibbs, leading to a heated exchange of accusations and insults. The debate eventually went on a break for nine minutes before the verbal sparring resumed.
This clash is not the first instance of hostility between the two candidates during the campaign. Tibbs previously expressed disappointment in Manuel’s decision to run as a Liberal, citing concerns about associating with individuals linked to corruption.
The NDP candidate, Liz Noseworthy, did not participate in the debate, which further intensified the showdown between Tibbs and Manuel.
In a post-debate interview, Tibbs defended his confrontational approach, stating that he aimed to address misinformation spread by Manuel. He expressed no regrets about his actions, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in politics.
Manuel, on the other hand, criticized Tibbs for bringing personal matters into the debate and labeled it as a targeted tactic. Despite feeling remorseful for the confrontational turn of events, Manuel stood by his response and highlighted the need for respectful political discourse, especially for the benefit of young observers.
As the election date approaches on October 14, the rivalry between Tibbs and Manuel continues to intensify, setting the stage for a closely contested race in Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans.
