“Global Leaders Convene in Egypt for Urgent Peace Talks”

Must read

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived late at the summit he organized in Egypt, allowing Prime Minister Mark Carney and other leaders to engage in discussions about the future of Gaza and broader peace prospects in the Middle East, as per a senior Canadian government official. The summit in Sharm el-Sheikh saw global leaders witnessing Trump, along with leaders from Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt, signing a declaration calling for lasting peace and prosperity in the region.

Trump’s delay, caused by his visit to Jerusalem and a lengthy speech at the Israeli Knesset, led to light-hearted remarks from him about potentially missing the gathering. This delay prompted an impromptu meeting among the leaders, including Carney, at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Convention Centre, providing an opportunity for open and candid discussions.

During the discussions, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested support for an international stabilization force for Gaza, aligning with Trump’s 20-point plan for the region. Carney emphasized the need for expedited aid delivery to Gaza, mentioning Canada’s preparedness with supplies. Utilizing existing programs like Operation Proteus was also considered to hasten aid distribution.

Leaders unanimously emphasized the urgency of providing humanitarian aid to Gaza and the necessity for visible changes on the ground in the short term. Unlike other summits focusing on gradual progress, this gathering emphasized immediate action on aid distribution.

Regarding Trump’s communication style, leaders have grown accustomed to it, acknowledging his role in facilitating the summit. There is a consensus that Trump’s engagement is crucial, especially in influencing Israeli actions. The summit, attended by representatives from nearly 40 countries, marked an important milestone, with Carney highlighting the commitment to advancing peace and security in the Middle East, particularly in expediting life-saving aid delivery.

The recent conflict initiated by Hamas in 2023 resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza. The aftermath of the war has left the region devastated, with a substantial portion of the population displaced.
