Established in 1976 by Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois, along with his brother Bob Lanois and partner Bob Doidge, Grant Avenue Studio is housed in a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E. The studio has been a hub for top talents from both Canada and abroad.
In 2023, Mike Bruce, along with partners Debbie Bruce and Marco Mondano, acquired the studio. Bruce described the studio as a “living museum” with a rich history and a unique charm that resonates with visitors. The studio’s legacy, spanning five decades, has attracted musicians and fans alike, turning it into a renowned musical landmark in Hamilton.
Jamie Tennant, a local music enthusiast and program director at CFMU, noted that Grant Avenue Studio has built a reputation as a must-visit location for artists due to its historical significance and association with music icons like Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash. The studio’s collaboration with Brian Eno, a prominent British musician and producer, further elevated its status in the music industry.
Despite minimal updates since the 1970s and ’80s, Grant Avenue Studio maintains its allure with unique features like sand-filled window wells for soundproofing. Bruce emphasized the studio’s role as a creative hub, welcoming diverse talents ranging from opera singers to indie artists, showcasing a broad spectrum of musical genres.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Grant Avenue Studio plans to continue its “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” initiative, featuring intimate on-site YouTube concerts showcasing local artists. The studio’s vintage MCI JH-500C console, reminiscent of the equipment used in producing classic rock albums like “Hotel California” and “Back in Black,” adds to its allure and appeal to musicians seeking a historical and technologically advanced recording environment.
As one of the longest-standing studios in Canada, Grant Avenue Studio has lined up various events, including an anniversary party, museum exhibition, and the return of the Road to Supercrawl contest, underscoring its ongoing commitment to supporting and promoting the music community in Hamilton.
