Ottawa is looking forward to a potential meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping at an upcoming summit in South Korea next week, as shared by a senior official from the Canadian government on Thursday. Carney, emphasizing the importance of re-establishing a broad relationship with Beijing following years of strained relations, is scheduled to attend an APEC summit in Seoul. He has expressed anticipation of engaging with high-ranking Chinese officials in the near future.

“We are optimistic about the possibility of a meeting and are making preparations accordingly. It would be beneficial to have a meeting at APEC if feasible,” stated a senior government official during a briefing regarding a potential encounter with Xi.

In August, China imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, a move that followed Canada’s announcement of imposing a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles a year earlier. Last Friday, senior officials from Canada and China engaged in discussions regarding the disputes over canola and electric vehicles, with Ottawa mentioning that no immediate breakthrough was indicated.
