A man who was found guilty of manslaughter in connection with a triple homicide that occurred in 2018 has passed away while in prison, according to Correctional Service Canada. The individual, identified as Nicholas Shipman, aged 43, died at the Regional Treatment Centre within Millhaven Institution, as stated in a news release issued on October 2.
In 2021, Shipman admitted to the charge of manslaughter in relation to the deaths of three Six Nations residents – Michael Jamieson, Melissa Miller, and Alan Porter – which took place in 2018. Originally facing second-degree murder charges for each of the fatalities, Shipman opted to plead guilty to the lesser offense.
On March 10, 2022, Superior Court Justice Paul Sweeny imposed an 18-year prison sentence on Shipman for his involvement in the triple homicide.
The Correctional Service Canada mentioned that Shipman’s relatives had been informed of his passing. They also stated that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death would be conducted, with the authorities and the coroner being duly notified. According to a spokesperson from Correctional Service Canada speaking to CBC Hamilton, the coroner holds the responsibility of determining the exact cause of death.
Following the tragic events, it was revealed that Jamieson, Miller, and Porter were known to be close friends. Melissa Miller was pregnant at the time of her untimely demise.
