Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment have revealed their plans to create a feature film based on the popular Labubu monster character. The collaboration signifies a significant move for the Chinese toy company to transform its collectible toy sensation into a global entertainment franchise. Renowned filmmaker Paul King, known for his work on “Paddington” and “Wonka,” will be producing and directing the movie alongside award-winning writer Steven Levenson. The film, set to be a live-action and CGI hybrid, is in its early development stages.
Labubu’s immense popularity has propelled Pop Mart’s shares up by 64% over the past year, surpassing the market value of key competitors like Hasbro, Mattel, and Sanrio. Drawing inspiration from Disney’s success, Pop Mart aims to expand Labubu and other characters into various entertainment ventures, including theme parks and merchandise.
The partnership with Sony Pictures is seen as a pivotal moment for Pop Mart’s expansion into diversified revenue streams, according to Morningstar analyst Jeff Zhang. While the movie is expected to boost licensing income, it may not have a significant impact on the company’s stock valuation. Labubu’s creator, Kasing Lung, will serve as an executive producer on the film, which is part of a global tour celebrating The Monsters characters’ 10th anniversary.
