Two individuals lost their lives and 13 others sustained injuries in Kyiv following Russian missile and drone strikes in Ukraine overnight, which also targeted infrastructure and energy facilities, as reported by Ukrainian authorities on Saturday. The assault in Kyiv triggered multiple fires and caused damage to residential structures, including a kindergarten, according to city officials.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned the strikes, emphasizing that they once again aimed at civilian and energy infrastructure, accusing Russia of attempting to create a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine coinciding with winter. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russian missiles and drones had targeted the energy grid, railroads, and homes in Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Sumy.

The Russian Defence Ministry, in a statement on Telegram, explained that the overnight attacks were directed at Ukraine’s military-industrial complex enterprises and energy infrastructure facilities supporting its operations. Additionally, the Defence Ministry claimed to have downed 121 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven allegedly heading towards Moscow.

Large plumes of smoke enveloped Kyiv on Saturday morning as firefighters scrambled to extinguish fires across the city. By midday, they had contained a fire in a 140,000-square-foot warehouse with the assistance of two helicopters and extinguished another building fire.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the importance of Patriot air defense systems in safeguarding Ukrainian cities from continuous Russian attacks. Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia had launched numerous ballistic and ‘Kinzhal’ missiles at Ukraine this year, underscoring the need for Patriot systems to protect cities. He urged partners with the relevant capabilities to implement discussed measures to enhance defense.

The Patriot systems have demonstrated effectiveness in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Ukraine is currently in negotiations to purchase 25 Patriot air defense systems from the U.S., with Zelenskyy calling on America, Europe, and G7 countries to assist in preventing future attacks that endanger lives.

According to reports on Telegram, Ukraine’s air force successfully downed four of nine missiles and 50 of 62 drones launched in the overnight attacks. The air force documented five direct missile hits and 12 drone strikes on 11 locations nationwide.
