However, a few Democratic senators have now reached an agreement to end the shutdown, potentially jeopardizing some of the political advantage they have garnered over the past six weeks.
Despite polls consistently showing Democrats winning the public opinion battle during the shutdown, with a majority of voters blaming the Republicans or Trump for the situation, the Democrats now find themselves with only a Republican commitment to hold a Senate vote on extending health insurance subsidies. This promise, which has been on the table for weeks, is likely to end in a Democratic defeat.
Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, expressed satisfaction with this outcome, likening the situation to a “shutdown about nothing.” The Democrats’ gains from the shutdown appear intangible, with the main commitment from Republicans being a return to the pre-shutdown status quo by reinstating over 4,000 federal jobs that were eliminated.
Criticism for the deal has emerged from prominent Democrats outside the Senate, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, who labeled the deal as “pathetic,” while Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton called it a “betrayal of the American people.” The decision by eight Senate Democratic members to support the deal has sparked debate within the party.
Although the shutdown may have initially benefited Democrats politically, its real impact was felt by ordinary Americans as thousands of flights were canceled, federal workers went unpaid, and low-income individuals faced the risk of losing SNAP benefits. Despite the criticism, the deal to end the shutdown is expected to pass the House with the Republicans’ slight majority.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries vowed to continue the fight, emphasizing the potential health-care cost increases that Americans may face. The Democrats aim to leverage the affordability issue gained from the shutdown in their political strategy moving forward.
